Q: What is the difference between Paper Valet™ and Paper Valet™ Pro?
A: Paper Valet™ Pro has all the features and capabilities of the standard version of Paper Valet™, and additionally includes powerful searching and indexing capabilities, duplex scanning, and customizable field names.

Q: What operating system do I need to use Paper Valet™?
A:

Paper Valet™ and Paper Valet™ Pro 2.x work with the following operating systems:

  • Windows® XP
  • Windows® 7
  • Windows® 8
  • Windows® 10
Our testing indicates that Paper Valet™ works on both 32- and 64-bit versions of the operating systems. Paper Valet™ is not supported on other operating systems.

Q: What kinds of scanners work with Paper Valet™?
A: Paper Valet™ works with most TWAIN and WIA compatible scanners. Almost all flatbed scanners come with a TWAIN or WIA driver. The registered version of Paper Valet™ will take advantage of an automatic document sheet feeder if your scanner has one.

Q: Where does Paper Valet™ store documents that I have scanned?
A: Documents are stored under the My Documents folder in a subfolder called My Papers.

Q: How do I know what version of Paper Valet™ I have?
A: You can check the version from the About Box. To get to the About Box, press the About… button or click on the Paper Valet™ System or Control menu, and then click the About Paper Valet… menu item.

You can also see the version by going to the Paper Valet™ program folder (the default location is C:\Program Files\Chocksett Software\Paper Valet) using Windows Explorer, right-clicking PaperValet.exe, choosing Properties, then clicking on the Version tab.

Q: I just installed Paper Valet™, where do I start?
A: Paper Valet™ has with a tutorial in the Help file. This is a good place to start. To get to the tutorial, click the Paper Valet™ Help button or press F1 to access help, and then browse to the Tutorial help topic.

Q: When I scan a page Paper Valet™ only shows a fraction of the image, what's going on?
A: You have previously set a cropping region in the TWAIN user interface from within another application. You can restore the full page scanning by first unchecking the Settings…/Scanner option Disable the TWAIN user interface. Then the next time you scan, the TWAIN user interface will be displayed. The user interface will let you change the cropping region. For detailed instructions about the TWAIN user interface, consult your scanner's reference manual.

Q: The Append button does not always seem to work. Why?
A: This situation may happen when you have the “clear invoice number field after each scan” option checked in the Settings… dialog. If you provide the invoice number then press Scan New, the invoice number field will clear after the scan is complete and the Append button will stay grayed-out. You can fix this problem by typing-in the invoice number again, or by unchecking the “clear invoice number field after each scan” option.

Q: I am unable to delete some of the accounts I previously created.
A: The delete button is only available if there are no files in the account folder. It's a safety measure. You can get around this by going to the View tab and individually deleting any files you have previously scanned into that account folder. The delete button will become available after this. Another option is to double-click on the Windows My Documents folder, then go into the My Papers folder and delete the account from there.

Q: Can Paper Valet™ recognize documents that I have scanned on a different computer?
A: Yes, just copy the documents to a subdirectory under your My Documents\My Papers folder. You can create folders, using Windows Explorer. for the Account Name and Account Number if they do not already exist.

Q: If I uninstall Paper Valet™ will it delete all of the documents I have scanned in?
A: No. The My Documents\My Papers folder will not be deleted when you uninstall Paper Valet™.

Q: If I upgrade to the registered version of Paper Valet™ can I keep my previously scanned documents, or will I have to start over?
A: You will not lose any documents when you upgrade to the registered version.

Q: My computer crashed and I reinstalled Paper Valet™, and the Scan buttons are grayed out. What's wrong?
A: Make sure you restore your My Papers directory. If Paper Valet has no directory structure to scan to, it will gray out the Scan buttons.

Q: I have a Brother MFC device and when I scan multiple pages, Paper Valet™ only shows the last page. What's wrong?
A: It turns out that the Brother TWAIN driver is not 100% TWAIN compliant. Switch to using WIA and your pages will scan correctly. You can switch to using WIA by going to Settings…/Scanner Settings and checking Use Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) in place of TWAIN.

Q: I've had varying degrees of success using Paper Valet™. Sometimes I can scan 100 pages with no problems, and at other times I can't scan a single page. What could be causing this?
A: First, you should check to make sure you have the latest driver available for your scanner. Check the manufacturer's web site. Some scanners are no longer supported and often you are stuck with old TWAIN drivers. Old drivers, if written correctly, should be compatible with the new TWAIN specification; but that is not always the case. Check to see if there are any firmware updates for your scanner. Often this information is hard to find on the manufacturer's web site. Finally, follow the manufacturer's steps for repairing or reinstalling the scanner's drivers.

Q: When trying to open a document in the external viewer, nothing happens. Why?
A: The way the external viewer feature works is by launching the executable you specify and passing the path to the document as a parameter on the command-line. For instance, you might enter this into the text box:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MODI\11.0\MSPVIEW.EXE

When you click the external viewer button, Paper Valet™ will invoke the program like this:

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MODI\11.0\MSPVIEW.EXE" "C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\My Documents\My Papers\VISA\12345678\01-01-2006.tif"

In order for this to work, the application must support command-line parameters.

Q: I am a registered user and I just upgraded from MrBills™ 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0 to Paper Valet™ 2.1. The main screen shows that I am unregistered, how do I register?
A: Paper Valet™ 2.1 uses a registration code to activate the registered version features. Previously, there were different installations for the evaluation version and registered version. Now there is only one install for both. From the Support section on our web site, choose Registration Information and enter the e-mail address you used to register MrBills™. You will be emailed your registration information.

Q: When I upgrade from a previous version of Paper Valet™ to Paper Valet™ 2.1 all of my previously saved preferences and settings are lost. Is there a way I can save them?
A: When upgrading from a previous version of Paper Valet™ to Paper Valet™ 2.1, your previously saved preferences and settings will not be carried over to the new version. However, going forward, any upgrade from version 2.1 to a future version will maintain the saved preferences and settings. Also, unlike previous versions, Paper Valet™ 2.1 and future versions will not require you to manually uninstall your old version of Paper Valet™ before installing the new version.

If you have some familiarity with regedit and wish to maintain your settings when you upgrade to version 2.1, you can export the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Chocksett Software\Paper Valet to a .reg file, perform the upgrade to version 2.1, then import the .reg file.

Q: Is there any option after I have upgraded from Paper Valet™ Standard Edition to Paper Valet™ Pro to be able to index the documents that I have already scanned?
A: Yes. You can rebuild the database index at any time. Paper Valet™ Pro comes with a Database Build & Repair Tool that lets you add existing documents to the index, rebuild the index from scratch, or remove broken document links from the index.

Q: When I register your software, do I have to download new software?
A: No. Simply enter the registration code in the Registration dialog box. Previous versions of Paper Valet™ required downloading a separate registered version. If you purchase Paper Valet™ Pro, you will receive download instructions by email.

Q: How do I enter the registration code?
A: From the About Box, press the Register… button, then enter the registration code and click Register Now.

Q: Can I share Paper Valet™ or Paper Valet™ Pro with my friends? Does this violate my license?
A: Paper Valet™ is shareware, which means you can give it to anyone you want, as long as you do not share the registration codes.

Q: Does Paper Valet™ or Paper Valet™ Pro allow scanning/collating double-sided documents?
A: Yes, you can use both versions to collate pages. If you first scan pages 1-3-5-7 using the "Scan New" functionality, you can then scan pages 2-4-6-8 using "Scan Append" functionality. Paper Valet™ will prompt you to collate the pages. If you choose Yes, you will get 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 otherwise, if you choose No, you will get 1-3-5-7-2-4-6-8.
